Think, problem-solve, and learn

My overall teaching objective is to facilitate learning by encouraging students to develop self-directed learning techniques. To achieve this objective I use problem-based teaching, student reflections, and presentation skills training.

Problem-based teaching

Problem-based teaching is grounded in real situations. The problems encourage students to develop individual and collaborative problem-solving skills. Problems are pedagogical situations in which individuals or teams of students use course content to come up with creative and effective solutions. As students apply course materials to a problem, they also learn collaborative work patterns, communication skills, and presentation techniques.

Reflection

I require that students reflect and evaluate their own learning. Depending on the course content, student reflections may be in the form of an electronic Web log, a diary, or a sketchbook.

Presentation training

Many classes require formal presentation of class projects, art works, or research reports, yet students often have no formal training in how to develop and deliver a concise and powerful presentation of their work. I include training and guest lectures on presentation. An important part of the course is to practice presentation skills. Formal presentations include fine art exhibition installations and effective artist's statements.

In summary, I use a variety of techniques to engage students' individual creative approaches to course content. These techniques build confidence and provide tools for students to effectively communicate their learning to others.
